What was it like to study BA (Hons) Computer Animation at the University of Glamorgan?

Joseph Lewis, BA (Hons) Computer Animation graduate
Joseph Lewis
University of Glamorgan - Cardiff School of Creative and Cultural Studies
BA (Hons) Computer Animation graduate
What was it originally that attracted you to study at the University of Glamorgan?
One reason was that I did the foundation course at Coleg Morgannwg which shared the building with the Animation course so I got quite familiar with the people on the course and what it was like. I also spoke to students that were on the course and was told how good it was. Another was that it was an accredited course that seemed to have a good success rate of students getting into jobs when they completed it.
What was the most important thing you learnt
a) conceptually?
Probably the concept of deconstructing emotions that people feel and how to reproduce those emotions with my own characters in my own scene in order to get a believable performance.
b) technically?
I guess learning 3DS Max and Maya software up to an employable standard.
What was the most challenging thing you encountered?
The hardest thing I found about the course was the six weeks of advanced techniques midway through the second year. What I learned during that time was invaluable but I found it quite intense and extremely challenging.
What do you feel were the best parts of your course/university?
I loved the whole experience but if I were to choose I would have to say that I loved the production side of the final major project. It was exactly what I loved doing; pure animation.
Also the staff were great and always around to help. This differs from most other university courses due to the way the course was set up. From my own experience other university courses didn't seem to have anywhere near the amount of contact with their lecturers that we had with ours. To me, this separates Glamorgan from most other courses.
What was the biggest achievement/success on the course for you?
Probably my greatest achievement came in the second year when I won a Glammie (a University award) in the end of year show for my showreel.
