Joint Industry Grading Scheme
Established in 2002, the Joint Industry Grading Scheme is run by BBC, ITV, Pact, Equity and BECTU.
The scheme covers the health and safety critical grades for:
- stunt performers and co-ordinators;
- special effects; and
- riggers and scaffolders.
Sub-committees made up of industry practitioners in each of these roles make the grading decisions in accordance with the rules of the scheme.
The way the scheme works is that the sub-committees agree on a list of skills that you should have to be employed in one of the roles above.
You submit evidence, as someone learning the ropes in one of these roles, to the sub-committee for your role in the form of a portfolio of the ‘on the job’ skills you have gained. The sub-committee then confirms whether you have met the criteria – if you have, you are confirmed as working at a particular grade.
Each scheme has a register of members by grade. In the case of the stunt performers, this is reflected in the publication Spotlight.
